. Most chargers are effectively in a car park, and terms and conditions apply. Please don't assume parking is free, sometimes it is so long as you register at the reception, but people have been caught out. Similarly, many motorway services have a 2 hour free parking limit, and while you should be able to charge in that time, its possible that you could overrun especially if you have to wait for a free charger. Interestingly, other brand chargers with better specs are available at lower prices, and it appears that the Tesla brand continues to retain its appeal and interest among the buyers Tesla, Inc., American electric-automobile manufacturer. The average shopper on the EnergySage Solar Marketplace breaks even on their solar investment in just seven and a half years, and solar panels continue to generate useful electricity for 25+ years.
Tesla announced a higher-capacity "Megacharger" along with the unveiling of a prototype for its Tesla Semi, a semi-trailer truck, in November 2017. Trucks would use the Tesla Megacharger Network to charge. The solar-assisted Megacharger Network stations would charge the semi trucks with 400 miles (645 km) of charge in 30 minutes, out of the total capacity of 500 miles (805 km) in the battery pack. To accomplish this, it will likely have an output level of over one megawatt. All you need to do is use the tethered cable, or if the version is one with a socket, a Type 2 cable to the car. You can get 3 phase versions including 32A ones which will be pretty quick, but they cost more and require 3 phase supply to your home. They are about 50% quicker unless you have dual chargers or the high power charger option in your car. The preference over Commando and a charge point, and whether to go tethered v untethered are all personal choice and often influenced by the grants available although we would not recommend daily use of the UMC2. Tesla make the nicest version but its also the most expensive. Independent of the Superchargers, Tesla also has Tesla destination chargers. In June 2013, Tesla announced the goal to deploy a battery swapping station in each of its existing supercharging stations, to be renamed Tesla stations. At an event at Tesla's design studio in Los Angeles, CEO Elon Musk demonstrated a battery swap operation with the Tesla Model S, which took just over 90 seconds each for the two cars participating in the demo. The swapping operation took less than half the time needed to refill a gasoline-powered car used for comparison purposes during the event. For US drivers who cover about 37 miles per day on average, a charger that delivers 20-30 miles of range per hour charged is ideal (6.6-10 kW power delivery). Average daily miles are recharged within 2 hours and even a close-to-empty 100 kWh battery can be charged fully overnight. For the vast majority of homes, charging at those speeds will not require major electrical service upgrades to 400 amps. Tesla drivers don’t need to worry about forgetting to charge. In a pinch, there are Superchargers. And Plugless offer an automatic, wireless charging upgrade for home Tesla charging (see below).Tesla Motors produces some of the most talked-about electric cars in the industry, the Model S and the Model X. A Tesla Supercharger is a 480-volt DC fast-charging technology built by American vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc. for their all-electric cars. The Tesla Supercharger network of fast-charging stations was introduced beginning in 2012. As of March 2020[update], Tesla operates 16,103 Superchargers in 1,826 stations worldwide (an average of 8.8 chargers per station); these include 908 stations in the U.S., 98 in Canada, 16 in Mexico, 520 in Europe, and 398 in the Asia/Pacific region. Each Supercharger stall has a connector to supply electrical power at up to 250 kW via a direct current connection to the 400-volt car battery pack.
When charging on AC, once the car limit has been met, it can not charge any quicker, irrespective of the capabilities of the charge point. Most car charging occurs at home or work, a situation that Tesla has compared to cell phone charging. As of 2014[update], less than 10% of charging came from Superchargers. In the month of July 2019, Tesla delivered 72 GWh through Superchargers. Depends on the charging level, the maximum power output of the charging station and max power intake of your EV. You could very well purchase another Tesla for the costs associated with providing enough electricity to your home to deliver 145 kW of power. The first Tesla Station with battery-swapping capability was planned to be piloted in California late in 2013, but this was subsequently delayed. Elon Musk said at an event in February 2014 that a few battery swap stations will open in the next few months along the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and that the initial stations will be studied before deciding to build any more. In mid-2013 each swapping station was projected to cost US$500,000 and have approximately 50 batteries available without requiring reservations. A "Tesla station" was a planned second version of the Supercharger that, as of 2013, would provide Tesla owners with extremely-fast battery pack swaps as well as fast-recharge for Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. However, the company's plans changed and battery swapping is no longer a significant part of Tesla's charging infrastructure plans.
Level 3 Superchargers can take a Tesla from 0-170 miles range in just 30 minutes. It can get to 80% full in just 40 minutes. At the 80% point, charging slows to safeguard battery health. This is region dependant. Destination or Fast charger Typically 20 mph on single phase, to a max of 60 mph on 3 phase These are slower and similar to the charger you may have at home. They all typically charge at 20-25 miles per hour depending on the model, although some are only half that rate if 16A. They can be found in some car parks, railway stations, restaurants, hotels etc. The idea is you will be leaving your car there for a while so a slower rate of charge is fine. These are latched to the car so can't be stolen while you are away and are typically started with an app or membership card.

The original Roadster is not equipped to charge from the Superchargers, but all other future Tesla cars will include the ability. This combination of higher peak power with V3, dedicated vehicle power allocation across Supercharger sites, and On-Route Battery Warmup enables customers to charge in half the time and Tesla to serve more than twice the number of customers per hour. Additionally, we are also unlocking 145kW charge rates for our 12,000+ V2 Superchargers over the coming weeks.

With Model 3 now shipping globally in high volumes and Model Y on the way, V3 Supercharging enables us to deliver the fastest production charging experience at an unprecedented scale compared to other electric vehicle manufacturers. By increasing the number of vehicles we’re able to charge at each Supercharger in a day, the investment we’re making in our network will go significantly further with every V3 station deployed. Paired with other savings, these efficiencies will translate to an increased pace of investment for Superchargers moving forward, with a continued focus on getting to 100% ownership coverage across all regions we operate. With thousands of new Superchargers coming online in 2019, the launch of V3, and other changes we’re making to improve throughput, the Supercharger network will be able to serve more than 2x more vehicles per day at the end of 2019 compared with today – easily keeping pace with our 2019 fleet growth. The European standard for Rapid Chargers is now CCS and this is now becoming increasingly common in other countries. Common to all electric cars are public charging locations. These come in a variety of forms and the proliferation varies from areas to area. We cover the various schemes like Ecotricity, Polar and Charge Your car (CYC) on a different page but it initially makes more sense to describe how you find out which ones are on your travels. For instance, there is no point signing up to Ecotricity only to travel around Scotland where they are mainly CYC.In 2016, the Advertising Standards Authority ruled that it was accurate to state that Tesla Superchargers are the highest-power chargers available in the UK, turning down a complaint by Ecotricity. Although the Superchargers are technically capable of 150 kW, Tesla cars restricted the power to 120 kW, but boosted that to up to 150 kW for the Model 3 Long Range and the 100 kWh versions of Models S and X in 2019. The Chinese GB/T standard has a theoretical maximum of 180 kW, but as of 2018, no car had a 500–600 V battery required for the 180 kW charging speed.
Before diving into the detail of charging options it's worth explaining the basics on what all the different terms mean:These are like other destination chargers although they can often be 3 phase which gives a charging boost. They also sometimes load share where one charger will deliver as much as it can, but if two chargers are in use, the power supply may be split so that both cars can charge. They are also tethered so you don't need a cable. These tend to be found at hotels, restaurants, and other places where you might want to visit and if you are reliant on the charger you should ring ahead to check access, many places require you to use their facilities although they may offer the charging for free in return. Look out for the signs behind the chargers, those with a red background are for Tesla cars only, the white background are suitable for any car that can take a Type 2 cable. Its not uncommon for people to be confused over whether non Teslas can charge at a Tesla charger, the only time it works is on a Tesla Destination Charger with a white background or a Tesla home charger. In October 2014, there were 119 standard Tesla Supercharger stations operating in the United States, 76 in Europe, and 26 in Asia. On 31 March 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the number of Supercharger stations would be doubled (from 613 stations with 3,628 chargers) by 2017. Tesla Model S was the first car to be able to use the network, followed by the Tesla Model X, Tesla Model 3, and Tesla Model Y. Some Tesla cars have free supercharging for life, some have 100-400 kWh per year, some have a single 100-400 kWh credit, and some have a monetary credit. If the car doesn't have any credit, you pay with a credit card on file for the electricity used (but in some localities that is not allowed, so Tesla charges for the time spent charging). An idle fee may be charged (depending on the percent occupancy of the Supercharger station) for continuing to be plugged into the Supercharger after charging has been completed.
The initial network was built in high-traffic corridors across North America, followed by networks in Europe and Asia in the second half of 2013. The first Supercharger corridor in the US opened with free access in October 2012. This corridor included six stations placed along routes connecting San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. A second corridor was opened in December 2012 along the Northeast megalopolis, connecting Washington, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. This corridor includes three stations in highway rest areas, one in Delaware and two adjacent ones in Connecticut. At some stations, the electricity is paid by local business to attract customers. By December 2014, 18 months after the announcement, no battery swapping stations had yet opened to the public. That same month, the company announced a revision to their much-delayed plans. A single battery-swap station would be opened in California as a pilot project, where only invited Model S owners could do battery swaps by appointment, to assess technical and economic aspects of the service. Demand for the priced service—which was expected to take three minutes (instead of the 90-second time demonstrated in 2013)—would be used to determine whether the company would fully commercialize battery swapping stations more generally. The original plan in the June 2013 company announcement explicitly indicated that the company would eventually upgrade all existing Tesla Supercharger stations to become Tesla stations, which would offer the battery-pack swap for the Model S in addition to the fast recharge capability that each facility initially opened with.
In late 2019, on a busy Thanksgiving weekend in San Luis Obispo, California, Tesla deployed a mobile Supercharger set-up on a flatbed trailer, offering additional charging capacity powered by a Tesla Megapack energy storage system. Tesla was never intending to provide free unlimited electrons to everyone for life. But they still offer a pretty darn good deal–fast charging, fuel prices at or under cost, convenient charging locations for road trips. And it is free for the first 1,000 miles or so every year. Considering that nearly 90% of charging is done at home or work when your car is parked anyway, 1k miles per year is about as much as you’ll ever need to charge publicly.
A “Level 2” EV charger is simply any EV charger that can connect to a particular type of electrical circuit — 240 volt, split phase circuits (similar to what an electric dryer uses). But just like different clothes dryer models take different amounts of time to dry your clothes, different EV chargers take different amounts of time to charge your car.The original V1 and V2 Tesla supercharging stations charge with up to 150 kW of power distributed between two cars with a maximum of 150 kW per car, depending on version. They take about 20 minutes to charge to 50%, 40 minutes to charge to 80%, and 75 minutes to 100% on the original 85 kWh Model S. The charging stations provide high-power direct-current (DC) charging power directly to the battery, bypassing the internal charging power supply. Every Tesla comes with some basic charging options. When you buy your Tesla Model S or Model X, you get a mobile charging cord and three adapters: one for a standard wall outlet (the NEMA 5-15), one for a higher-powered 240 volt wall outlet (the NEMA 14-50), and one for public charging stations (with the exception of Tesla Superchargers).Between May 2017 and September 18, 2018, Tesla allowed existing Tesla owners to give free unlimited supercharging for life to up to five friends if the friend purchased a new Tesla and used their referral code. Tesla also offered all existing Tesla owners who purchase a new Model S, Model X or Performance Model 3 for themselves will receive free unlimited supercharging for life on those cars. Electric cars like the Tesla Model S and Model X offer significant fuel savings on a day-to-day basis thanks to their efficient use of electricity as fuel. The cost to fully charge a Tesla depends on the car you have and where you live, because electricity prices vary from utility to utility and from state to state. The price to “fill up” a Tesla Model S battery at home ranges from $6.60 (in Washington state) to just over $21.00 (in Hawaii). For a Tesla Model X, prices will range from $6.70 (Washington) to nearly $22.00 (Hawaii).
