Das Triebwerk war serienmäßig mit einer elektronischen Benzineinspritzung ausgestattet und leistete 180 PS.[6] Bei Testfahrten kamen Beobachter zu dem Ergebnis, dass der Seville das „beste Fahrverhalten eines Cadillac seit Menschengedenken“ an den Tag legte: Zwar käme der Seville nicht an das Fahrverhalten eines Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 heran, allerdings sei er auch deutlich preiswerter.[5] Ab 1988 war der Seville mit dem Sport-Touring-Sedan-Paket (kurz STS) lieferbar, das mit strafferem Sportfahrwerk für eine bessere Straßenlage sorgte und beim Nachfolger den Status einer eigenständigen Modellvariante erlangte.

1994 Sevilles remained largely the same on the outside as the 1993 models, but the SLS models recieved a new detuned 270 hp 4.6L Northstar as standard equipment (the 4.9L V8 was no more), while the STS models retained the 295 hp version. Both Sevilles now had traction control and a Road Sensing Suspension. 1995 didn't see much change from 1994 (not that much was needed), but in 1996 both the SLS and STS models received 5 horsepower increases, up to 275 and 300 respectively. Sevilles got daytime running lights and a new dashboard with larger analog gauges. Not much changed on the 1997 models as a newly redesigned 1998 model was waiting in the wings, other than OnStar becoming an option this year for the first time. In 1981 Sevilles had 2 new engines available. In addition to the 350 V8 diesel and the 6.0 V8, a 105 hp Buick-built 4.1L (252 cid) V6, based on the Buick 3.8 L V6 became available (which while reliable was not up to the task of propelling such a heavy automobile) and the "V-8-6-4", a V8 engine based on the 6.0L V8. In theory the engine management computer would assess the loading on the drivetrain and deactivate cylinders that it deemed unnecessary to keep the car powered most efficiently. It was an idea quite ahead of its time, and somewhat ironically GM and Chrysler are now using a similar technology in their V8s today. Unfortunately the electronic technology available in 1981 just wasn't up to the task, and the V-8-6-4 engine was unceremoniously dumped after just one year. It was a troublesome engine management system, and it was generally disconnected by servicing dealers, making the engine run on all 8 cylinders at all times. A 3-speed automatic remained the sole transmission on the diesel, a 4-speed automatic was standard on the other engines.

Early Sevilles produced between April 1975 (a total of 16,355) to the close of the 1976 model year were the first Cadillacs to use the smaller GM wheel bolt pattern (5 lugs with a 4.75 in (121 mm) bolt circle; the 2003–2009 XLR also uses this pattern). The first Sevilles shared a minority of components with the X-Body. The rear drums measured 11 in (280 mm) and were similar to the ones used with the Nova 9C1 (police option) and A-body (Chevelle, Cutlass, Regal, LeMans) intermediate station wagons. Starting with the 1977 model year, production Sevilles used the larger 5-lug bolt circle common to full-size Chevrolet passenger cars (1971–76), Cadillacs, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, and half-ton Chevrolet/GMC light trucks and vans. It also received rear disc brakes, a design which would surface a year later as an option on the F-body Pontiac Trans Am. 1975–76 models required a vinyl top due to the roof being originally produced in two parts; the rear section around the C-pillar was pressed especially for Cadillac and a regular X-body pressing was used for the forward parts. Due to customer demand, a painted steel roof was offered in 1977, which required a new full roof stamping. 1977 Seville production increased slightly to 45,060 vehicles. The following year, production increased to 56,985 cars and ended up being the peak production year for the first generation. The big news for 1988 was the introduction of the Seville Touring Sedan (STS), equipped with the FE2 touring suspension. It featured special 15-inch alloy wheels, upgraded springs, a rear sway bar, a 15.6:1 steering ratio for enhanced handling, a grille mounted emblem, cloisonne trunk lock cover, and a unique four-place interior. Seville Touring Sedan production totaled 1,499 units in 1988. The first 1988 STSs were custom built by Cars and Concepts and announced at that year’s Detroit Grand Prix. These initial run models were available to VIP's within General Motors, the Cadillac Division, some major shareholders and a short list of dignitaries. A special label was affixed to the lower corner of the driver-side front door identifying it as one of the original STSs.
